Draminski has been selling their Ovulation Detector for dogs since 1993. It has been thoroughly tested by their distributors worldwide and is currently sold with great success in countries such as: Canada, USA, UK, and Japan, to name a few.
This Electronic Ovulation Detector for Dogs:
- eliminates the need to mate the bitch multiple times;
- identifies "false heat";
- identifies "split heat";
- reduces/eliminates breedings that "don't catch";
- is time saving;
- greatly reduces the expense, as compared to the multiple progesterone tests used to identify the exact time of ovulation.
Extremely Accurate, Safe, Simple and Easy to Use:
The detector is a small, portable and very versatile instrument which is powered by a common 9V battery. It gives readouts of electrical resistance of vaginal mucus which undergoes characteristic changes during the course of the bitch's heat.
Testing Procedure:
The detector should be disinfected with alcohol or similar disinfectant before and after each use (see Video). To reduce the chance of spreading infection, do not lend your Draminski Ovulation Detector to another breeder.
Readings are taken by simply inserting the probe into the vagina (see Video). Measurements are immediate. One or sometimes two readings a day as heat progresses are recommended.
Characteristic changes in the electrical resistance of vaginal mucus are shown by the value of units on each given day of heat. The best time for mating is indicated on the graph. It occurs at the beginning of the decrease in mucus resistance values 1 - 2 days after the peak value is reached. This graph shows a typical curve (independent of breed) during heat.
Often in practice, there are variations to this normal curve and the maximum peak reading between animals. Therefore, this optimal graph may be adjusted to each breeder's own experience and that of the individual bitch.
The Ovulation Detector for dogs has had favourable results in tests at the Obstetrics Department, of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Agriculture and Technology, Olsztyn, Poland. The advantages of using the detector have also been confirmed by research carried out at the university in Giessen, Germany.
Lifespan of Canine Ova & Sperm and Predicting the Whelping Date:
Bitches ovulate immature ova. It takes between 48 - 72 hours for the ova to ripen after ovulation. The ova remain alive and viable for another 2 - 3 days after ovulation. Fresh or fresh chilled sperm, remain alive in the bitch's reproductive tract for 5 to 6 days. Therefore, successful insemination can occur with the bitch being bred anywhere from 2 days prior to ovulation to 4 days after ovulation.
On the other hand, frozen thawed sperm live only a few hours, therefore it is advised that you work with your Vet and have them perform a transcervical Artificial Insemination (A/I) or a surgical A/I no earlier than 2 - 3 days following ovulation if you are using frozen thawed sperm.
If pregnant, a healthy bitch will whelp exactly 63 days after ovulation, regardless of when she was mated or when her eggs were fertilized. Therefore, knowing the date of ovulation will make your calculations much more precise.
